The Forestry Research Center (FRC) has an objective of PROVIDING users with scientificrnknowledge by disseminating research output, so that the, production and productivity of treernIrnspecies improved and conservation activities are better managed.rnAt the moment, FRC is experiencing difficulties in fulfilling the above-mentioned objective.rnAmong the factors for experiencing such difficulties are the isolated research, poorrninformation and communications technology (ICT) use, lack of enough and accessible expertsrnin the field of species selection, and lack of systematic research compilation techniques.rnIn an attempt to help FRC address such problems, particularly with respect to informationrndissemination, the present study, specifically, explores the potentiality of applying expertrnsystems technology in species selection task. in particular, A Prototype Species SelectionrnExpert System, SPEX, is developed by working closely with experts in the research centerrnhaving years of expiree in an attempt to help FRC address such problems, particularly with respect to informationrndissemination, the present study, specifically, explores the potentiality of applying expertrnsystems technology in species selection task. In particular, A Prototype Species SelectionrnExpert System, SPEX, is developed by working closely with experts in the research centerrnhaving years of experience and skills in the area of species selection. And skills in the area of species selection.rnThe knowledge acquired from these experts is modeled using the Hierarchical structure thatrnrepresents concepts and parameters involved in species selection. Based on the model, thernknowledge is represented using production rules. These rules are then implemented in thernknowledge-pro expert system shell. Backward chaining is used in inferring the rules andrnextracting recommendations. The Certainty Factor (CF) for each species is calculated onrnpriority basis to measure the belief of the human expert on the selected species.rnSPEX has also been tested by the experts and users from Forestry Research Center (FRC).rnBased on an encouraging result/output obtained, they have established its acceptability andrnaccuracy. The experts finally recoil/mended that a way should be devised to build a completernspecies selection expert system that include all tree species, which were researched in therncenter.
