Both qualitative and quantitativerndata collection methods are used in order to achieve the objective of thisrnstudy. Questionnaires were distributed to 31 women journa lists workingrnin the six FM radio stations and in-depth interviews are conducted withrnfour media managers. Analysis of data showed that there are smallerrnnumbers of women journalists than men journalists in the six stations.rnAdditionally, private stations have better representation of womenrnjournalists than government stations. The research also finds out thatrnfewer women reached senior management positions. The findings alsornsuggest that young and well-educated women dominated the stationsrnand also majority of women journalists have less than five years ofrnprofessional experience. Women journalists widely assumed that theyrnhave a different perspective than men journalists in terms of selectingrnnewsworthy items and story sources, reporting styles and changing thernnegative portrayal of women in the media. Women journalists claim thatrnthey faced difficulties in relation to their gender, as many accepted themrnfirst as women then as professionals. A tendency of relegating women to certainrnnews beats is also reported as a challenge for women journalists.rnHowever, almost all editors, interviewed for this research confirmed storyrnassignment is based upon skill and capacity rather than gender. Sexualrnharassment should not be overlooked since cases are reported by womenrnjournalists. Findings of this study showed that women journalists tend tornsolve their problems by challenging the existing newsrooms culture andrnworking on "hard" issues. Some opt to struggle in bringing women's andrnchildren's issues as newsworthy items.
