In the contemporary knowledge based economy, the contribution of intellectual property torneconomic growth and business enterprise value, especially in developed countries isrnincreasing. Though the share of intellectual property rights to the country‘s economic growthrnis not paramount as of today, the Ethiopian intellectual property system has prescribed andrnprotected patent, copyright and trademark. Valuation opinion on intellectual property rights isrnnecessary for collecting the appropriate income tax from related party transactions, awardingrninfringement damages, preparing financial statements, assignment and licensing thatrnappropriate prescriptions are crucial to guarantee certainty. Assignment, securitization andrnlicensing are the usual legal vehicles to commercialize intellectual property. There are rulesrnthat meant to govern such vehicles in the existing Ethiopian laws. The thesis examines thernadequacy of the existing rules on valuation of intellectual property for taxation, disclosure inrnfinancial statements, intellectual property infringement damages determination, assignmentrnand licensing. It also evaluates the sufficiency of the rules on assignment, licensing andrnsecuritization of intellectual property rights in Ethiopia. On the basis of the investigations, itrnconcludes that the rules on valuation and commercialization of intellectual property rights inrnEthiopia are inadequate in terms of existence, clarity or tenability and recommends specificrnmeasures aimed at addressing these insufficiencies.
