In Ethiopia the use of mother tongue as a MOI for formal educationrnwidely started with the adoption of the new education and training policyrnof 1994. Thus, several nationality languages are being used as mediumrnof instruction. Anguak is among these languages. The purpose of thisrnstudy is to assess the implementation of mother tongue education usingrnAnguak language as a medium of instruction in Gambella Woredarn(Gambella Town) and also examining the attitude of teachers, studentsrnand society to ward the use of this Anguak language as a medium ofrninstruction and suggest possible solution to the problem. To this end,rnresearch employed a survey descriptive research methodology. Thernstudy’s sample includes teachers, students, parents and educational andrnlanguage experts in the town.rnData was collected using interview, focus group discussion andrnobservation. Qualitative methods was used to analyze datas.rnAbsence of in service training, the negative attitude of the students,rnparents and teachers toward using Anguak medium and absence ofrnreference material are among the major findings of this research.rnTherefore so as to solve the problem of implementing Anguak medium ofrninstruction teacher should receive in service training in Anguak context,rnAnguak medium reference material should be design, Ethnic andrnlinguistic complexity should take in to consideration by the Regionalrngovernment and assessment and evaluation should be incorporated intornimplementation of AMI Anguak policy.
