This study deals with the function of focus in Oromo~ Itrnattempts to show the different mechanisms in which focusrnfunctions are renlized. Dik (1978) developed the theory of FGrnwith the view point of functional nature of a language. Itrnis stated in his study that ~agmatic Function is one ofrnthe three levels of Functional nations. Focus is regardedrnas one of the four ~agmatic Functions. Focus presents whatrnis relatively the most important or salient inforrn~tion in ~rngiven setting. Even though Focus is a universal f~ture ofrnany language~ ~he types, the scopes, the functions andrndistribution of Focus vary from l~nguage to language. Thern:'distribution of fornstudy examines the types, the scopes, the functions ..;..llu."il.l.rnOromo in the light of Dik (1978) and (1989).rnThe study has three chapter.: In CMp~r;l.One ,.~a; &tatement thernSignificance, the Objectives, the Limitations and Methods of thernstudy are introduced. In addition, previous related studies inrnOromo are also included. The theoretical framework of FunctionalrnGrammar with the aim of introducing the basic concepts of FG inrngeneral and the treatment of focus a~ a pragmatic function inrnparticular are described in Chapter Two. The Third Chapterrndiscusses the various focus functions in the language. Thernfocalizing devices, the types, the scopes ~nd functions of focusrnare raised and discussed. Finally, the study presents thernsummary of the preceding chapters.
