This thesis describes and analyzes the historical and philological significance of the threernManuscripts of the chronicles of Iylisu I who ruled Ethiopia from 1682- 1706.rnThe first one referred to as the Manuscript of Tarik1i N1ig1ist (Ms- A), is found in thernInstitute of Ethiopian Studies. This Manuscript is believed to have been written in thernearly J9'h century. The second one termed as Manuscript of the history of king of kingsrnIylisu I (Ms-B), was copied from Ms- A by M.RENE BASSET. It was written in the laternJ91h century and is also found in the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. The third Manuscriptrnis Manuscript of Annales Regis Iylisu I (Ms-C), which was edited by Ignazio Giudi in midrn201h century.rnThe study describes the historical facts during the period of Emperor Iylisu I andrncompares and contrasts the first two Manuscripts from the philological point of view.rnThere are omissions of words, repetition of the same words, morphological comparison, rnhomoteleuton error, and the influence of Amharic words. However, both have goodrnhistorical details of the late medieval period. About the religious teachings, thernManuscripts embodied the orthodox teachings of Christology- the Incarnation of Divinityrnand Humanity or God and Man besides other traditional history and Biblical teachings.rnTherefore the major finding of the research indicates that both Manuscripts are importantrnin dealing with the history, linguistics and religion of the time and also for textualrncomparison.
