The purpose of this research is to study the quality management practices of buildingrnconstruction companies in Addis Ababa. Furthermore, the research tries to show that qualityrnmanagement system is not regarded as a critical success factor among the buildingrnconstruction companies. 40 building construction companies in the capacity of Grades 1 tornGrade 4 have been considered for this study. Other grades have not been considered due torntime and cost limitations. A quantitative approach was used in this research. Questionnairernwas developed based on the 7 quality management principles as indicated by ISO 9001:2015rnto study the quality management systems of the respective companies. A descriptive analysisrnindicates a decline in quality awareness and implementation as the level of the contractorrndecreases from Grade 1 to Grade 4. Unlike a high perception on quality management systemrnand long term firm profitability the overall mean score is 2.95 with a standard deviation ofrn0.565 on a 5 point Likert scale. A correlation analysis reveals that there is a strong and positivernrelationship between the 7 quality management principles and quality improvement tools. Arnregression analysis found that customer focus, leadership and engagement of people havernsignificant contribution to improving quality in building constructions. The study concludesrnthat the quality management system is not regarded by contractors as a critical success factor.rnLower grade companies need to meet customer requirements and measure customerrnsatisfaction. Management needs to establish vision and empower employees and evaluaternperformances. Open discussions must be encouraged and company resources need to berndeployed effectively. Furthermore, trainings must be given and companies need to measurernimprovements consistently while decisions must be made based on reliable data and analysis
