BackgroundrnMaternal mortality occurs from risks attributable to pregnancy and child birth as well asrnfrom poor availability and quality of health services. ANC is the key entry point of arnpregnant woman to receive quality health service, broad range of health promotion andrnpreventive services which promote the health of the mother and the baby. The UNrnmillennium Development goal (MDGrn5rn2000) aims to reduce the number of women whorndie in pregnancy and childbirth by three-quarters between 1990 and 2015.rnObjective- This study aimed on assessing the quality of antenatal care service provisionrnat Defense Hospitals: Addis Ababa and Debrezeit.rnMethodology- It was a cross sectional qualitative and quantitative study performed onrnthe antenatal care attendees during the study period. Data collection was performed usingrnstructured questionnaire and focus group discussion with clients and facility observationrnchecklist.rnResult- Data on clients’ satisfaction on quality of antenatal care were collected from 403rnrespondents. Findings indicated overall clients’ satisfaction with respect to indicators ofrnquality care was around 85.6%. The odds of satisfaction of women who got informationrnon danger signs were about five times more than those who did not get the informationrn[AOR (95% CI) 4.883(2.007-11.8800)].The qualitative study identified an imbalancernregarding information provision between clients’ expectation and received informationrnand facility observation showed the presence of adequate material and human resourcernfor providing antenatal care.rnConclusion– In general this study has revealed majority of the clients’ were satisfiedrnwith the service. Information provided to clients during the antenatal checkup was not asrnexpected by the respondents. The facility observation checklist has revealed adequacy ofrnavailable material and manpower to provide the necessary ANC.rnRecommendation- The high satisfaction level from the antenatal care service in thernhealth institutions should be sustained. The health care providers should be aware of thernimportance of meeting women’s information needs during antenatal visits and then bernprepared to satisfy them by increasing their consultation time and mechanism ofrnproviding similar information to clients should be established and strengthen in bothrnhospitals.
