Performance Evaluation Of Cell-dyn 1800 And Sysmex Kx-21 Hematology Analyzers At St. Pauls Hospital Millennium Medical College Addis Ababa Ethiopia

Background: To assure the accuracy of results and performance of hematology analyzers, eachrnlaboratory must evaluate their performance. Different models of Sysmex and Cell- Dynrnanalyzers are commonly used in Ethiopia including St’ Paul’s Hospital Millennium MedicalrnCollege. However, their performance has not been evaluated in most cases. If hematologyrnanalyzers are not verified and evaluated for the specific population they serve the diagnosis ofrnmany of diseases and hematology related clinical disorders will be unreliable.rnObjective: To evaluate the performance specifications of Cell-Dyn 1800 and Sysmex KX-21rnthat are found in St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.rnMethods: A hospital based cross-sectional study with purposive sampling technique was used atrnSt. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College from April 1 to April 8; 2015. A sample ofrnnormal values was used for repeatability, high target values of hemoglobin, RBC, WBC andrnplatelets for linearity and carryover checks with subsequent background count were used. Datarnwere collected using observation checklist and then entry, cleaning and analysis were performedrnby Microsoft Excel 2007 and SPSS version 20. Percentage, %CV, residual plotting, andrnPearson ́s correlation coefficient were used to describe the results.rnResult: precision check revealed that both Sysmex KX-21 and Cell-Dyn 1800 values fall withinrnthe manufacturers’ specifications. Linearity verifications of WBC, Hemoglobin, RBC andrnPlatelet showed that both analyzers produced a very good correlation coefficient of > 0.97, whichrnis also confirmed by residual plotting where all the values of the diluted samples surpassed thernmanufacturers’ specifications.
