Background: Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of interrelated abnormalities (namely obesity, rndyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension) that increase the risk for cardiovascular diseasernand type 2 diabetes. Adults with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from and threerntimes as likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared with people without the syndrome. Thernco-existence of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in individuals potentiate the cardiovascular riskrnassociated with each of these mentioned circumstances. rnObjectives: This study aimed at to assess metabolic syndrome in relation to sex among type 2rndiabetes mellitus patients in Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. rnMethods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 372 participants from December 1, 2018 tornFebruary 30, 2019. Structured questionnaires were used for appropriate data collection; capillaryrnblood sample was collected from each participant following an overnight fast, for estimation ofrnFBS and lipid profile was taken from the patient clinical records. In addition, MetS is interpretedrnaccording to modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel-IIIrnguideline. Data obtained was entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS version23 software packages.rnA p-value of ≤ 0.05 was set as statistically significant. rnResults: The prevalence of MetS was 63.4% in the studied population.
