Background: Diabetic mellitus patients are at higher risk of different complications. Anemiarnamong diabetic patients is poorly diagnosed and there is shortage of evidence on its magnitude.rnEven though anemia is higher in diabetes patients attending Ayder Comprehensive SpecializedrnHospital, its magnitude and treatment is less emphasized.rnObjective: The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of anemia among adult diabetesrnpatients having regular follow up at the diabetic clinic of Ayder comprehensive specializedrnhospital, Northern Ethiopia, 2018/19.rnMethods: Institutional based cross sectional study was conducted among 262 adult diabetesrnpatients who had regular follow-up at the diabetic clinic of Ayder comprehensive specializedrnhospital, Tigray regional state, Northern Ethiopia from January to March 2019. Systematicrnrandom sampling technique (k=7) was used to recruit study participants. About 5 ml venousrnblood was collected by experienced laboratory technologist under a complete aseptic technique.rnTwo ml venous blood was kept in a test tube coated with EDTA for hemoglobin determination.rnThree ml of the venous blood was used without any anticoagulant for creatinine determination.rnThe association of variables was assessed using bivariate and multivariable analysis in logisticrnregression model with p-value, odds ratio and 95% CI in the SPSS software. rnResults: from a total of 262 diabetes patients, forty seven (17.9%) were found to be anemic (17rnmale and 30 females). Among the related factors, residency (AOR, 13.3, 95% CI, 2.5, 70.8, rnp=0.002,), eGFR (AOR, 5.37 95%CI, 8.2-35, p=0.016,) and sex (AOR, 2.47, 95%CI, 1.03, 5.92,rnp=0.042,) were significantly associated with anemia. rnConclusion: According to this study, magnitude of anemia is higher among diabetic patients.rnRenal function impairment, residency, HIV infection, being female and age significantly rnassociated with anemia.
