Introduction rnNational mental health strategy which was published in 2015/16 reported the prevalence ofrnmental illness as schizophrenia 0.5%, bipolar 0.5%, depression 5%, completed suicide 7.7%,rnattempted suicide 3.2%, problematic alcohol usage 2.2% - 3.7%, alcohol dependence andrncannabis use 1.5%, childhood mental illness 12% - 25% and epilepsy 1%. rn"Psychotherapy" is a umbrella term that describes the use of psychological tools to help a clientrnovercome problematic thoughts, feelings, behaviors and to improve relationships and socialrnskills. Recent studies have looked at demographic, gender, ethnic and cultural profiles ofrnpatients in psychotherapy and observed that females are more inclined to engage inrnpsychotherapy than males, and that there is a prevalence in psychotherapy rnObjective rnTo identify the characteristics of patients that are referred for psychotherapy in Tikur Anbessarnspecialized hospital psychiatry clinic rnMethod rnFor this research the study design was descriptive type which was used to explore the sociorndemographics of the patients. A retrospective chart review using the data extraction sheet therninformation was assessed from the electro medical recording system 67 charts of patients werernreviewed. Using a non-probability sampling method at Tikur Anbessa specialized hospital. rnResults rnThe result of this research has shown that the mean age of patients to care is 29 and most of thernpatients are female in gender. 41.8 % has a college degree, 21.9 % employed and 51% single. .rn25% of the patients that their chart of patients from reviewed have a diagnosis of depression andrn12 % had anxiety disorder. Antidepressant was 43% of the medications and 48% of the patientsrnwere not on medication. Patients who dropped out of care consisted up to 31.3%.46% of therntherapy that was done for a patient in this research was CBT.
