Background: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease which has a great impact economically, andrnposes a threat to the health of affected communities. Both urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasisrnare endemic in Ethiopia. However, despite the fact that the endemicity of urogenitalrnschistosomiasis is highly focal distribution, it has been given less attention when compared withrnstudies conducted on Schistosoma mansoni. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to a betterrnunderstanding of the epidemiology of urogenital schistosomiasis in Ethiopia which is essential andrna prerequisite for planning feasible elimination strategies. rnObjective: The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and intensity of urogenitalrnschistosomiasis in school-aged children in three communities of Ethiopia. rnMethods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Urine samples were collected using screwrncapped collection tubes. All urine samples were tested with urine dipstick and dipsticks positivernsamples were screened using a microscope. rnResults: A total of 729 school-aged children participated in the study and of which 44.44% (304)rnwere females and 55.56% (405) males. The age range of participants is 5 to 16 and mean agernrecorded for the study population was 10 years. The combined prevalence of S. haematobiumrninfection in the study areas is 23.46% (95% CI= 0.20, 0.26). Among positive-tested participants,rn92.98% had a low intensity of infection whereas high intensity was recorded in 7.02% of the studyrnpopulation and the Mean Urine Egg Count (UEC) was 11.2 eggs/10ml (95 CI= 9.24, 13.16). rnConclusion: The study shows that Schistosoma haematobium infection is still a public healthrnproblem. The elimination program should be able to account for communities which have not yetrnstarted treatment to curb the long-term complication of the diseases.
