Establishment Of Reference Interval For Hemoglobin A1c And Fructosamine For Apparently Healthy Adults In Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

Background: HbA1c and fructosamine used for diabetes monitor and control as a glycemicrncontrol. The absence of locally derived referenc intervals for these parameters from apparenetlyrnhealth subjects for the local will impact on the physician, laboratories, and researchers. rnObjective: to establish reference interval for hemoglobin A1c and fructosamine for apparentlyrnhealthy adults in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. rnMethodology: A cross sectional study was conducted in four selected sub-cities (Akaki, Kirkos,rnArada, Yeka), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from December 2019 to April 2020. The study wasrnincluding study participants with 18 and above years of age. Blood sample was collected andrnanalyzed by using Cobas 6000(c 501) instrument. Both Kolmogorov–Sminorv, and MannWhitneyrntestrnwerernanalyzedrntorncheckrntherndatarnnormalityrnrndistribution and partitions, respectively.rnReference intervals, lower 2.5rnth rnpercentile and 97.5rnthrn percentile for the upper, (overall, andrnspecific for sex and age) were determined using non-parametric methods. rnResult: - Out of the total 344 participants, 256 (121 males, 135 females,) study participants agedrn18-60 years participated in this study. Reference interval was established from 4.70 – 6.27% and rn203 - 321mol/L for HbA1c, and fructosamine, respectively. There was weak associationrnbetween HbA1c and age (r=0.1803, p=0.0378). rnConclusion: This study established reference intervals for both HbA1c and Fructosamine forrnadult population using the current available equipment platform. The established referencerninterval is applicable for the current practice in the country to diagnosis, treatment, and monitor rnof diabetics mellitus.
