Ethnopharmacological relevance: The leaves of Ajuga remota (A. remota) have been utilizedrntraditionally for the cure of diabetes mellitus and other ailments.rnAim of the study: The present study was aimed to assess the antidiabetic activity of A. remotarnleaves extract in Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats.rnMaterial and methods: Antidiabetic activity of the ethanol extracts of A. remota leavesrn(AREt) was studied in STZ induced diabetic rats. The effect of extract on fasting bloodrnglucose, rnbodyrnweight, rnlipidrnprofile, rnserum, rnalaninernaminotransferase, rnaspartaternaminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine and total protein were analyzed.rnGlibenclamide was used as standard reference drug.rnResults: A. remota leaves ethanol extract (AREt) showed highly significant blood glucosernlowering effect. After diabetic rats treated with AREt (200 and 400 mg/kg) for 28 days, therernwere a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, LDL-rncholesterol, serum enzymes (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase andrnalkaline phosphatase), and significant increase in body weight, serum total protein, HDL-rncholesterol, levels as compared to untreated diabetic rats.rnConclusion: The results of the experiments showed that A. remota leaves might be useful forrnmanagement of diabetes mellitus and other abnormalities associated with this metabolicrndisorder. The present study might support the traditional use of A. remota for diabetesrnmellitus treatment.rnKey words: Ajuga remota, diabetes mellitus and streptozotocin
