Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in females. Severalrnstudies have shown proinflammatory biomarkers can facilitate tumor growth andrnmetastasis by altering tumor cell biology and activating stromal cells in the tumorrnmicroenvironment. They have been also associated with poor survival of breastrncancer patients.rnObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate postsurgical serum interleukin 6 andrnC reactive protein in breast cancer patients before receiving chemotherapy in TikurrnAnbessa specialized teaching hospital, Ethiopia.rnMethodology: A hospital based cross sectional study design and a convenient non-rnprobability sampling technique were applied in this study. Forty-four breast cancerrnpatients visiting oncology chemotherapy unit were identified for the study and werernsubjected to assessment. Serum interleukin-6 and c –reactive protein values werernmeasured before initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients usingrnanrnElectroChemiLuminescencetechnologyrn(ELC)rnassayrntechniquernandrnimmunoturbidimetric respectively.rnResult: A total of 44 cases were included in the study. The median age was 42 years, rnthe majority of patients had invasive ductal carcinoma, and did present with positivernnodes involvement. Postsurgical elevated levels of serum CRP and IL-6 werernobserved in most of the patients. Progress in breast cancer staging were associatedrnwith increases in serum IL-6. IL-6 level correlated with stage (P < 0.026), CRP hasrnborderline correlation with stage (p = 0.05). However, IL-6 and CRP have shownrninsignificance correlation with tumor size and lymph node involvement. Serum IL-6rnlevels were correlated positively with CRP levels (rho = 0.530, p < 0.01).rnConclusion: These results suggest that proinflammatory status of the breast cancerrnpatient have high values of interleukin-6 and C– reactive protein. Progressivernelevation of serum interleukin 6 observed as stage of cancer advanced.rnKey words: interleukin-6, C - reactive protein, breast cancer, proinflammatory
