Background: Type 2 diabetes is a major non-communicable disease with an increasingrnprevalence in Ethiopia and worldwide. About 2% of Ethiopians are reported to have type 2rndiabetes, but this may be an underestimate, due to a paucity of studies on diabetes epidemiologyrnin Ethiopia.rnObjective: Assessment of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patientsrnattending diabetic clinic of the Tikur Anbessa Hospital, Addis Ababa.rnMethods: This study was carried out on 106 type 2 diabetic patients attending Tikur AnbessarnSpecialized Hospital Diabetic Clinic. Fasting blood glucose, serum lipid panels, serum insulinrnconcentrations, Apo lipoprotein A-1 and Apo lipoprotein B were measured in diabetics who wererntaking oral medications. Patients taking insulin were excluded from the study. Insulin resistancernwas measured by calculating HOMA-IR for each patient. Blood pressure, body mass indexrn(BMI), waist circumference and smoking status were also determined.rnResult: Most patients (80%) had poorly controlled fasting blood glucose (>126 mg/dL), andrnthis was similar for males and females. Serum triglycerides were abnormally high in 58.7% ofrnpatients, LDL-cholesterol levels were elevated above 100 mg/dL in 50% of patients, and serumrnHDL-c levels were abnormally low in 76.9 % of patients.88.6% of the diabetic patients hadrnshowed significant insulin resistance (P3.0).rnTwo third of the diabetic patients showed normal blood pressure. Furthermore, sixteen ofrnthe 106 patients were cigarette smokers and smokers over 40 years old with diabetes hadrnsubstantial cardiovascular risks as determined by their Framingham cardiovascular risk score.rnConclusion: These results emphasize the need for improvedprograms for diabetes screening, rnprevention and care in Ethiopia. The biochemical and medical significance of the results arerndiscussed.rnKey words:Type2Diabetes,Insulin Resistance, Dyslipidemia, HOMA-IR, Apolipoprotine
