A study involving the Collection, Isolation, Identification and Sensitivity screening of majorrnbacterial uropathogens and also the antibacterial activity of two traditionally used plants againstrnthe isolates of these uropathogens for various ailments in Ethiopia was conducted at EthiopianrnHealth and Nutrition Research Institute (E1-INRI). The specimens for the isolation of the bacterialrnuropathogens were collected from adult out·patients with clinically proved symptomatic Urinaryrntract infections and referred to the EHNRI Reception of the Laboratory Core Service and thernArsho Medical Laboratory by physicians from various Hospitals or Clinics. Out of the total 241rnclean catch mid stream urine samples 66 were revealed to have significant bacteriuria. The mostrnfrequently isolated species was E.coli (77.3%) followed by Klebsiella spp. (12.1 %),rnPseudoJ/lonas .ljJjJ. (4.5%), Proteus spp. (4.5%) and En/erobac/er sjJjJ. (1.5%). In this study, highrnlevel multidrug resistance was observed particularly for commonly prescribed antibiotics:rnAmoxycillin (69.7%), Ampicillin (64.6%), Tetracycline (53.0%) and Co·trimoxazole (43.9%)rn. using disc diffusion method. The ill Vi/I'D antibacterial activities of 80% methanol crude extractsrnand their hydro alcoholic solvent fractionates prepared from both seeds of Albizia gl//JIl1lijera andrnAlbizia anli1elminlica were tested for their antibacterial activity against the clinical isolates ofrnE.coli (31), Klebsiella spp.(8), Pselldollionas spp.(3), Prole liS ~pp.(3) and also standard referencernstrains of E.coli ATCC,25922 and P.aerllginosa ATCC,27853 using agar dilutiol) method. Thernchloroform fraction didn't exhibit any activity while n·butanol fraction was found to have strongrnantibacterial effects as compared to the aqueous solubilized fraction which showed antibacterialrnactivity only against E.coli and Klebsiella .Ipp. at I OOO~lg/m1. Minimum inhibitory concentrationrnvalues of n·butanol fraction against the clinical isolates of E.co/i showed stronger activity thanrnthe commonly used broad spectrum antibiotics: Tetracycline ancl Amoxycillin. Additionally, arnbeller activity was exhibited by this n·butanol fraction against the clinical isolates of Klebsiellarnspp. and Pseudomonas ~pp. than Amoxycillin. Over all, in this study it was found that n·butanolrnfraction of 80% methanol crude plant extracts of both plants may contain bioactive compoundsrnwith therapeutic activity.rnKeywords: Albizia al1li1ellilinlica, Albizia gllllllllifera, MIC, Uropathogenic E.coli, UTI
