The prevalence and antibiogram of pathogenic E. coli strains which cause diarrhea vary fromrnregion to region, and even within countries in the same geographical area. In Ethiopia, diagnosticrnapproaches to E. coli induced diarrhea in children less than five years of age are notrnstandardized. The aim of this study was to determine the involvement of pathogenic E. colirnstrains in child diarrhea and determine the antibiograms of the isolates in children less than 5rnyears of age with diarrhea at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences Tikur AnbessarnGeneral Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Children (n=98) (47 males & 51 females),rnaged 01 month to 60 months suffering from diarrhea were included in this study and stoolrnspecimens were collected and processed from January 2017 to March 2018. Fecal specimensrnwere inoculated on MacConkey and Eosin Methylene Blue agar to grow E. coli. E. coli isolatesrnwere biochemically confirmed using biochemical tests indole, methylred, Vogues proskuer andrncitrate. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were determined using Kirby Bauer disk diffusionrnmethod. Heating method was used to extract DNA from E. coli isolates. 58 E. coli isolates wererndetected out of which 25 pathotypes belonging to different classes of pathogenic strains: STEC,rnEPEC, EHEC, EAEC were detected by using PCR technique. Pathogenic E. coli exhibited highrnrates of antibiotic resistance to many of the antibiotics tested. Moreover, they exhibited multiplerndrug resistance. The involvement of antibiotic resistant pathogenic E. coli in diarrheic childrenrnwas prominent and hence focus should be given on the diagnosis and antimicrobial sensitivityrntesting of pathogenic E. coli at AAU CHS Tikur Anbessa General Specialized Hospital. Amongrnantibiotics tested, Cefotitan could be a drug of choice to treat E. coli.
