Introduction: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer- related death in women worldwide.rnIn Ethiopia its incidence is rising, causing high rates of morbidity and mortality currently in therncountry. There is a variation in the prevalence of underlying risk factors among differentrncountries. However, study that examines the local risk factors of breast cancer among women isrnlimited in Ethiopia.rnObjective: To assess risk factors of breast cancer among patients attending Tikur AnbessarnSpecialized Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa,rnEthiopia, 2020.rnMethods: Institutional-based case-control study was conducted with a sample of 272 womenrn(136 cases and 136 controls). Cases and controls were selected by a systematic random samplingrntechnique. Data was collected by interviewer administered questionnaire and the collected datarnwas cleaned for incompleteness using Epi dataversion 4.6. Data analysis was carried out usingrnSPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics wereemployed and bivariate and multivariate analysisrnusing Odds ratio (OR) were utilized to evaluate the association between dependent andrnindependent variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered as a level of significance forrnassociations.rnResults: In this study, a total of 272 participants with 136 cases and equal number of controlsrnwere participated. The mean (+SD) age of the participants was 42.7(±11.3) and 40.7(±14.6) forrnthe cases and controls respectively. Increased risk of breast cancer was associated with earlyrnonset of menarche (AOR=7.9; 95% CI (1.959-31.905)) and use of packed food or drinksrn(AOR=4.4; 95% CI (1.481-13.218)). Living in urban areas (AOR=0.1; 95% CI (0.016-0.712))rnand increased parity (AOR=0.750; 95% CI 0.567-0.992) were associated with reduced risk ofrnbreast cancer.rnConclusion and recommendation: According to the finding of this study, place of residence, rnage at menarche, parity and use of packed food or drinks were associated with breast cancer.rnTherefore, attention should be given on specific risk factors, to reduce the increasing burden ofrnthe disease in our country.
