Background: A significant number of women in developing countries, predominantly in thernSub-Saharan countries, do not have the opportunity to be attended by skilled personnel duringrnchildbirth. This is a major factor in maternal and infant mortality including Ethiopia.rnHowever, a little has been explored about factors determining choice of delivery place amongrnwomen’s of child bearing age, in Ethiopia there has been slow progress regarding MDG-5 with arnmaternal mortality ratio of 673 per 100,000 live births and 19,000 maternal deaths annually.rnObjective: The objective of the study is to assess the factors affecting the choice of deliveryrnplace among women of child bearing age group in Dega Damot, West Gojjam Zone, Amhara,rnEthiopia, 2014.rnMethod: A descriptive community based cross-sectional study design that employed bothrnquantitative and qualitative data collection methods was conducted from April, 2014 to May,rn2014. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 361 participants.rnA pre tested and structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The data was entered usingrnEPI INFO version 3.5.4 and was exported to SPSS version 20.0 for data cleaning and forrnbivariate and multivariate data analysis.rnResult: The mean age of the respondents was 30.93±6.006 SD. Majority of mothersrn107(29.6%) were in the age range of 25–29 years. Of the total respondents 361, 296(82%) werernrural residents. A number of independent variables like; age of the respondents, respondentrneducational status, monthly household income, gravidity and means of transportation were foundrnto be significantly associated with women choice of delivery place. Qualitatively inaccessibilityrnof health facilities (distance, transportation problem), lack of women’s decision making power tornuse modern health service, inaccessibility of media and ANC follow up were identified torninfluence maternal choice of delivery place.rnConclusion and recommendations: In conclusion, the study revealed a number ofrnindependent variables like; age of the respondents,rnrespondent educational status, monthlyrnhousehold income, gravidity and means of transportation were found to be significantlyrnassociated with women choice of delivery place. Increasing maternal health service coverage andrnpromotion of maternal health information, education and communication in the community arernrecommended.rnKey words: Institutional delivery, Home Delivery, Dega Damot District, Ethiopia
