Background: Globally, more than half million women die annually as a result ofrncomplications of pregnancy and childbirth. Disrespect and abuse is one of the unspokenrncauses of maternal mortality and morbidity globally. Providing compassionate andrnrespectful maternity care services to laboring mothers is one of the most importantrninterventions to ensure survival of women. However, compassionate and respectfulrnmaternity care has received less attention both in practice and research.rnObjective: To assess the level of disrespect and abuse of women and associated factorsrnduring facility-based childbirth in Bahir Dar town, Amhara Region, North West Ethiopia,rn2017.rnMethods: A community based cross-sectional study design triangulated with in-depthrninterview was conducted to collect data from study participants in Bahir Dar town fromrnMarch1-March 30/2017. Study subjects were selected through systematic random samplingrnbased on their proportional distribution of sample size to each sub-city. Structuredrnquestionnaire was used to collect quantitative data and semi-structured guide for in-depthrninterview. The data was coded and entered into Epi data 3.1 version and the analysis wasrncarried out in statistical package for social science 22 versions. Univariate, Bivariate andrnmultivariate analysis with 95 % CI was carried out.rnResults: From the total of 422 mothers interviewed 410 responded for the question with arnresponse rate of (97.2%).The overall prevalence of disrespect and abuse was 67.1 % withrn95% CI (63-72) .Almost all of the mothers were experienced at list one form of disrespectrnand abuse. The most prevalent form of abuse and disrespect was physical abusern236(57.6%) and non-consented care 236(57.6%). Disrespect and abuse is prevalent on lowrnsocio economic group, as length of stay in health facility increase disrespect and abusernincrease and disrespect and abuse were significantly increase at governmental hospitalrnthan private at P- value of less than 0.05.rnConclusion and recommendations: In this study the result showed that the prevalence ofrndisrespect and abuse was common. Family monthly income, number of ANC visit, lengthrnof stay in health facility and type of health facility were some of the factors associated withrndisrespect and abuse. High prevalence of disrespect and abuse in maternity care at healthrnfacilities calls for strengthened action to provide quality of maternity care for allrnchildbearing mothers. Further community based research in both urban and rural area willrnbe needed.rnKey words: Disrespect, Abuse, Maternity, Child birth, Ethiopia.
