Background: Violence against women (VAW) is recognized as a significant public healthrnproblem, with grave consequences for abused women’s physical, mental, sexual, andrnreproductive health and their children. The most common type is intimate partner violence (IPV).rnWorldwide, more than a third of women have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimaternpartner violence or non-partner sexual violence. The root causes of intimate partner violencernagainst women are diverse, complex and there is no single factor that explains why individualsrnare violent, or why violence is more prevalent in some communities than in others.rnObjectives: To estimate the magnitude of self-reported lifetime history of physical and/or sexualrnviolence and identify determinant factors of violence against women by their husbands.rnMethods: Community based cross sectional study was done on 368 randomly selected marriedrnwomen, with door to door technique using structured questionnaire by trained data collectors.rnThe collected data was checked for completeness immediately, entered using EPI INFO versionrn3.5.4, analyzed using SPSS version 21 and the results were presented by statement, tabular, barrngraph and pie-chart presentation.rnResult: The mean age of the respondents was 34.12 years (± 8.4SD). The magnitude of intimaternpartner violence against women was 54.9%.The proportion of women who ever experiencedrnphysical and sexual violence in life time was 53.8% and 63.9%. Forty seven percent of everrnmarried women reported that they had been physically forced by their husbands to have sex evenrnif they did not want to. Multivariate analysis showed, husband occupation and alcoholrnconsumption, marital status, woman’s aggressiveness, and talking to husband about moneyrnmatter were independent factors for intimate partner violence against women.rnConclusion: The overall magnitude of intimate partner (sexual and/or physical) violence againstrnwomen was widely observed among the study participants. Compared to similar studies thernfinding is among the highest. From this, we can conclude that there are still gender statusrndifferences, despite improvement in living condition of the community.rnRecommendation: The study also suggests that there is a need to correct the imbalance on actsrnof violence against women by their partners through continuous culturally sensitive information, rneducation and communication programs and empowering women
