Background: Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of acquiring hepatitis Brninfection due to occupational exposure. A range of measures and interventions can contribute tornreduce HBV transmission to HCWs to low levels. There is effective and safe vaccine againstrnhepatitis B infection throughout the world many HCWs especially in resource poor countriesrnremain at risk because they are not vaccinated against HBV.rnObjective: To assess the knowledge about HBV vaccine and vaccination status against HBV ofrnnurses at governmental hospital in Addis Ababa.rnMethod: Facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among governmental hospital nursesrnof Addis Ababa from March to April 2015. The study population was selected amongrngovernmental hospital nurses of Addis Ababa. A total of 272 nurses were included in the study.rnData was collected by using self-administered questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed byrnusing SPSS version 20 statistical software. Descriptive statistics was used for determining results.rnChi-square tests and binary logistic regression and multi variable logistic regression analysis wasrnalso used to characterize the association between the variables. P-value ≤ 0.05 was used forrnstatistical significance.rnResults: This study found the mean knowledge score for HB vaccine to be 8.38 with standardrndeviation of 2.50. More than half of study participants (51.8%) had poor knowledge about the HBrnvaccine. Among the study participants only 67(24.4%) were vaccinated at least once in their liferntime. Out of those respondents who were vaccinated, only 35.8% were fully vaccinated. This studyrnalso identified vaccination status was associated with factors like the hospital where thernrespondents were working, hospital wards, history of exposure to needles and sharp injury andrnknowledge of respondents about the vaccine.rnConclusion: This study identified knowledge of respondents about HB vaccine unsatisfactory andrnvaccination status of respondents to be very low.rnRecommendation: Hepatitis B prevention and control implementation guideline and hepatitis Brndata has to be derived, and from this guideline each concerned bodies including governmentalrnhospitals could work out their own strategy on hepatitis B.rnKey words: HBV, Knowledge, vaccination status, Nurses, governmental hospitals
