Assessment Of Knowledge Of Self-care And Associated Factors Among Type 2 Diabetic Patients On Follow Up Visits In Government Hospitals Of Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is not a single disease entity but rather a group of metabolicrndisorders sharing the common underlying feature of hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a major growingrnhealth problem in the world. Poor awareness among diabetic patients about the disease and self-carernactivities is one of the important variables influencing the progression of diabetes and itsrncomplications, which is largely preventable.rnObjective: The aim of this study was to assess self-care knowledge and associated factors amongrntype 2 diabetes on follow up visits in government hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.rnMethod: Institution based descriptive cross sectional study was employed from March 15 to Aprilrn15, 2016 using pre-tested, validated, structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. A total of 422rntype 2 diabetic patients whose age was 18 year and above were included. Study participants werernselected by systematic sampling technique after proportional allocation of samples to the hospitals.rnFurthermore, descriptive statistics, and binary and multivariate logistic regression analyses werernemployed to assess factors associated with diabetes self-care knowledge among type 2 diabetes.rnResult: Out of 422 patients with type 2 DM intended to participate in the study, 412 patients actuallyrnresponded for the interview making a response rate of 97.63%.
