Malaria is a highly prevalent disease in the developing world. The disease is endemic in Ethiopiarnwhere 67% of its population are susceptible to the disease. Oromia is the largest and mostrnpopulated region of Ethiopia. The present study aimed to evaluate quality of artemetherlumefantrinern(AL) tablets marketed in Addis Ababa and Oromia region in Ethiopia. Previousrnreports of antimalarial quality in the region have shown presence of unauthorized antimalarials.rnUsing purposive sampling method samples were obtained from hospitals, health centers andrnprivate pharmacies from Addis Ababa, Bishoftu, Adama, Metehara, Jaja Jarjartu, Bale Robe,rnNegelle Borena, Meki, Zeway, Shashemene, Ambo, Woliso and Jimma areas in Oromia regionrnand Addis Ababa city in Ethiopia.rnQuality parameters such as weight variation, hardness, friability, diameter, thickness andrndisintegration were studied initially. Then, dissolution tests were carried out using simulatedrngastric and intestinal fluids. Finally, tablet samples were assayed utilizing HPLC to checkrnwhether artemether and lumefantrine quantities conform to label claim. Pharmacopoeialrnspecifications were met on weight variation, friability, disintegration and dissolution tests and nornsubstandard or counterfeit products were found.
