Food irradiation is the processing of food products by ionizing radiation in orderrnto control food borne pathogens, reduce microbial load and insect infestation,rninhibit the germination of root crops and extend the durable life of perishablernproduce.rnThe treatment of food with ionizing energy benefits food producers,rnmanufacturers and consumers. It can extend the shelf life of animal or plantrnproducts by destroying spoilage organisms. It can destroy pathogenicrnmicroorganisms and parasites in frozen, fresh and processed foods, therebyrnreducing the incidence of food- borne diseases.rnThis study reviewed global practice of food irradiation, determination dose ofrnFood Irradiation, Ethiopian food items, possible application food irradiation inrnEthiopia and its impact on food security for Ethiopia. The hazards posed tornconsumers as a result of consumption of irradiated food reviewed.
