In t.his t.hesis, we work out. t.he low-energy (~300Me V) form of t.he protonprotonrn(p-p), neutron-neutron (n-n), and proton-neutron (p-n) int.eraction potentialsrntaking the field-theoretic view that these interactions are mediated throughrnthe exchange of 7rrn0rn, 7r± mesons. In this process we reproduce the exact form ofrnYukawa potential. vVe extend these calculations to obtain an approximate form ofrntwo-pion exchange potential. vVe then generalize t.he formalism to include isospinrnand arrive at the correct form of the low-energy nucleon-nucleon (N-N) potential.rnIn the process we establish the charge independent hypothesis of nuclear forces.rnFurther we observe that our model for the long-range part of N-N forces correctlyrnpredicts that for I = 0, the two nucleon system exists as a bound state (deuteronrnnucleus) while for I = 1, it exists as scattering states
