This study investigates production of glucose (fermentable sugar) from water hyacinth pretreatedrnwith 1.5% H2O2 and 3%NaOH. Cellulose-hemicellulose and lignin content of water hyacinthrnwere determined using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and found to be 42.1% and 11.46%rnbefore pretreatment and its crystallinity was measured by X- ray diffraction (XRD) which wasrn31.29%.The pretreated sample (54.11% cellulose-hemicellulose and 7.04% lignin with 53.68%rncrystallinity) was hydrolyzed in an autoclave using diluted sulfuric acid (0.5% -1.5%), at arntemperature between 100 – 130 rnC for a hydrolysis time between 45 – 75 min. The Highestrnglucose yield (indicating efficient hydrolysis of cellulose) was found to be 0.451 mg/ml at an acidrnconcentration of 0.5%, temperature of 130 rnornC and hydrolysis time of 75 min. In spite of itsrndetrimental effect on environment and society, it is also possible to produce valuable productsrnfrom the weed. However, further researches should be done on utilization of water hyacinth inrnsmall and large scale.
