Ethiopia is incredibly work to get out the scoieties from poverty and meet the growing demand throughrnvarious development policies, plans, and projects. Several studies described that both government andrninternational non-governmental organizations works on different development projects to realize socitiesrndevelopment. Ethiopia is also one of these countries with poor project execution, number of failedrnprojects and few successful projects. Despite several causes can be enlisted to these inefficiencies, factorsrnrelated to project management take the lion share. Particulalry, the project identification and selectionrnphases of the project management cycle is the key stage for both the success and failure story of thernproject. Therefore this study aimed at assessing the project identification and selection processes inrnselected governmental and International non-governmental organizations in Ethiopia. The research isrndesigned to produce both qualitative and quantitative information through a cross-sectionall study design.rnA set of criteria was developed to select relevant sample units in government and international non- governmental organizations. 56 respondents are participated on the study. A structured questionnair isrndesigned, distributed and collected using Google online survey form. The finding of the study showedrnthat government projects have less engagenment to stakeholder identification, communication,rncommunity need assessment, and participation. Moreover non-government organization gives higher teamrnfocus or team selection in the identification phase of the project. Government organizations are also havernbetter feasibility assessment practice than non-governmental organizations. The non-governmentrnorganizations uses government plan and police as a good source of project identification in addition tornother sources and have a good team composition.Besides these, most government projects lack robustrnproject identification and selection compared to non-governmental organizations. Government projectsrnshould focus on stakeholder identification; inviting stakeholders to contribute their ideas; the needs of thernstakeholder, and communicating with stakeholders before implementing and commissioning thernproject.Further studies should be done on how team members of government development projects arernrecruited. Therfore, Peoject identification, screening, selection, feasibility and prefeasibility study souldrnbe done in depth in both non-government and government organizatoions.
