Assessment Of Digital Literacy Of Academic Librarians In Ahmadu Bello University Library Complex A.b.u. Zaria Nigeria

The paper examined the digital literacy of academic librarians in Ahmadu Bello University, librarycomplex A.B.U. Zaria. The objectives of the study were to identify the types of Digital Literacypossessed by librarians in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, to determine the level of proficiency ofDigital Literacy among the librarians and to find out the challenges of acquiring Digital Literacyamong the librarians. Survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprisedof all the academic librarians in Ahmadu Bello University, Zarialibrary complex which are 116,because the population is not too much, all was used as no sample required. The instrument usedfor collecting data was the questionnaire. From the findings, it was discovered that use of Mobilephones, Electronic mailing, social networking, surfing internet, sharing resources online andcarrying out computer operations are the major Digital Literacy possessed by the librarians. Thelevel of proficiency in the use of digital technologies is however high for the use of mobile phones,and social networking, moderate for computer operations, sharing digital resources online, and waslow in the use of electronic conferencing. The major constraints to the acquisition of DigitalLiteracy are electricity supply, lack of adequate digital facilities, internet network bandwidth andcost of digital literacy skills training. Recommendations were made; Management of A.B.U. Zarialibrary complex should provide regular and intensive training for librarians to update theirknowledge and could be proficient in the use of such technologies.
