Background: The professional practice in a high risk critical care setting requires knowledge,rnskills, clinical experience and problem-solving abilities to assess monitor and effectivelyrnrespond to the needs of critically ill patients. In addition, little is known regarding knowledgernof nurses’ working in the intensive care, concerning prevention guidelines and its applicationrnduring the provision of patient care in the ICU. The Gaps between knowledge and actualrnclinical practice have not been sufficiently studied and needs further research which willrncontribute to the quality of care and improvement of critical patient’s outcome.rnObjective: this study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of nurses working in the ICUrntowards prevention of VAP at selected Hospital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2015.rnMethods: Study was conducted in five randomly selected governmental hospitals at AddisrnAbaba, Ethiopia. Descriptive cross sectional study design were employed on all 117 nursesrnworking in the ICU in respected hospitals. Data Analysis Descriptive and inferential statisticsrnwere utilized to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics included frequency, percentage, meanrnand standard deviation. Chi square test was utilized to determine association of selectedrnvariables. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 200.rnResults: The current study revealed that, Most of the studied sample 60.7% had satisfactoryrnlevel of knowledge and 53.3% had Good level of practice regarding VAP prevention measuresrnwith a total mean score of (15.97 ± 3.23) and (15.47+2.029) respectively. Significantrnassociation was found in knowledge between participants with different education level asrnfound (p = 0.0.041), age groups (p = 0.008), sex of participant (p=0.023) and betweenrnparticipants with different years of ICU working experience (p< 0.001). No significantrnassociation was found regarding nurses' practice (p=>0.05) except sex was found (p-0.010).rnConclusion and recommendation: Most Nurses work in critical care unit of the five hospitalsrnare knowledgeable and have good practical performance regarding prevention of VAP,rnHowever, significant number of nurses 39% and 47% lacked knowledge and practicernrespectively. So updating knowledge and practice of nurses through Education and trainingrnwould help to improving the quality of nursing care and also keep nurse’s knowledge andrnpractice consistence.rnKey Words: Knowledge, Practices, Intensive care unit
