This study is attempting to explain the case of “Eastern IndustrialrnZone”, which found in Eastern part of Addis Ababa in the DukemrnAdministration. The overall objective of this study is to investigaternachievements, challenges and potential impacts of Chinese EasternrnIndustrial Zone and its contribution to the economic developmentrnof Ethiopia at large and surrounding community in particular, andrnthereby to forward suggestion for identified problems and gaps.rnThis study trying to identify the achievements and challenges ofrnEIZ based on different relevant literature review of concepts andrnexperiences of different countries, especially focusing on the arearnof policy, laws regulations and directions that govern SEZs;rnespecial arrangements of institutions and existence key actors forrnits proper management and operations; identification of positivernand adverse effect of the project on local community andrnenvironment; and infrastructures and over all benefit realized byrnthe establishment of the project.rnThe study has been based on primary, and secondary datarncollectionrntechniques,rngrouprndiscussions,rninterview,rnandrnquestionnaires (semi-structured and unstructured) as well asrnobservation research methods in general. Qualitative andrnquantitative survey instruments applied aimed at examining andrndescribing the current status of the eastern special industrialrneconomic zone.rnThis study identified that, the Chinese based eastern industrial zonernfound to be a incredible potential source in absorbing labor force attracting potential investor from china and other regions, appearsrnto be as a good benchmark for other zone development of therncountry. On the other hand it has been working without priorrninstitutional legal policy framework, well-organized institutionalrnarrangement, planned environmental and social impact assessment,rnlack of linkage with national and local economy among others.rnThis study recommends the need for well-structured institutionalrnlegal framework and government close support, collaboration withrnits strategic business partners, strong linkage and integration withrnthe national and local economy, viable social and environmentalrnplan among others
