Back ground : Every year about 12 million children die before reaching their fifthrnbirthday .Over 70% of these deaths occur in the developing world, Ethiopia is one ofrnthese countries with unacceptably high infant and under five child mortality rate of 96.8rnand 141/ 1000 respectively. Acute respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases, malaria,rnmeasles and malnutrition are the major causes.rnObjective : To investigate factors influencing the compliance of carers of under fivernchildren receiving IMCI, in Awassa H. centre, Awassa town, SNNPR state, Ethiopia.rnMethod : A cross sectional survey was conducted from October to June 2006. The studyrnpopulation were all carers of under five children who attended IMCI clinic at AwassarnHealth centre. The sample size required for this study was determined using the formularnfor estimating single population proportion and a total of 401 carers were used. Datarnentry and analysis were conducting using Epi Info 2002 and SPSS.rnResult : Health workers explained correctly how to give antibiotic to 274(89.5%) ofrncarers but demonstrated to only 19(6.2%) of carers. 65(21.3%) of carers gave antibioticrncorrectly. ORS was given correctly by 30(19.8%) of carers and 25(19.1%) of carers werernattend follow up. 175(72.9%) of carers said they did not know how to give antibiotic.rnConcerning safe relief of cough 46(24.5%) of carers used safe remedy. 266(66.3%) ofrncarers provided less fluid or fluid as usually to sick children after visiting the healthrncenter.
