Assessment Of The Role Of Csos In The Development Of Democratic Political Culture In Ethiopia

The purpose of this study was to assess the role of CSOs in the development ofrndemocratic political culture in Ethiopia. Descriptive survey method was used to attainrnthe objective of the study. The study was conducted by using 27 CSOs engaged in therndevelopment of democratic political culture of the country, 5 donor agencies and 3rnconcerned government organizations. Respondents were executives of CSOs, governmentrnofficial and representatives of donor agencies. Respondents were selected throughrnpurposive sampling. Questionnaires, interviews and document review techniques werernemployed. The statistical tools used to analyze data were percentage, tables, graphs andrncharts.rnThe results have revealed that the historical role of CSOs in the development ofrndemocratic political culture of the country was a recent development where CSOs havernspent considerable time in service delivery activities. As far as the contributions of CSOsrnin the area are concerned, it is insignificant. CSOs have faced many challenges many ofrnwhich arise from government. The CSO-state relation in the area in Ethiopia was notrnsmooth for various reasons. There were also instances where CSOs were engagedrnbeyond their mandate especially in the political activities. The government of FDRE hasrnenacted CSP in 2009, which governs CSOs in Ethiopia. Its immediate impact will bernnegative while in the long term its effect will be positive
