Background: HIV positive individuals may or may not have intention to have children.rnThey could also have different degrees of utilization and demand for family planning. Thernextent of the intention and how it varies by individual, social, health and demographicrncharacteristics is not well understood. The desire of HIV infected persons to have childrenrnin the future has significant implication for the transmission of HIV to sexual partners orrnnewborns.rnObjective: The aim of the study is to assess fertility intention and family planning Utilizationrnof people living with HIV/AIDS who are at ART follow up care in Bahir Dar.rnMethod: The study was undertaken from March 11 to 26, 2008, using quantitative crosssectionalrnstudy supplemented by qualitative in-depth interview on a sample of 366rnPLWHA on follow up care. The study subjects were selected using quota samplingrntechnique. The pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect the data and analysed usingrnEPI info window 2000 and SPSS 11.0 statistical packages.rnResult: Nearly one fifth of respondents (21.6%), male 42 (53.2%) and female 37 (46.8%)rnhad an intention of child. In general PLWHAs who were intended to have children arernthose on ART follow up care more than a year (AOR:4.33 ,95% CI: 1.35-13.90) and notrnhaving any children (AOR: 13.9 ,95% CI: 3.6-54.27) than those who did not desirernchildren. Fifty five (33.7%) male and 46 (22.7%), overall 101(27.6%) were using familyrnplanning during the study period. The respondents who were using family planning werernmarriage/living together (AOR 3.67, 95%CI: 1.48-9.08), divorce/ widow (AOR: 0.30, 95%CI:rn0.10_0.90) and who can read and write (AOR: 3.76 95%CI:1.26-11.22) showed significantrnassociation with current family planning use. Thirty nine (51.3%) married women/liverntogether had unmet need.rnConclusion: A high proportion of HIV positive individuals who received medical carernexpressed a wish for parenthood and wants to use family planning. The extent of fertilityrnintention and family planning needs of these people has implication for vertical,rnheterosexual transmission and the need for counselling.
