Global population is increasing at an alarming raternand Ethiopia is contributing 1.5 million persons / year.rnThe pyramid shaped age structure of the population as inrnmost developing countries is a prima facie evidence ofrnhigh fertility and imminent population explosion.rnSingle and multiple decrement life table techniquesrnwere used to analyze pattern of acceptance and userneffectiveness of contraceptive methods in Dale WoredarnYirgalem Family Planning Project, Ethiopia. Thernmajority of acceptors (59%) never had formal education.rnSubstantial percentage (79%) of acceptors were in the agerngroup 20-34. Continuation rate was high 94.1% forrnpill, ( 97.1%) for injectable, (82.6%) for other methods andrn(95.1%) for all methods combined. Single decrement liferntable technique showed that educational status, number ofrnliving children and husband's attitudes were found to bernimportant factors for high continuation rates. FOCUSrngroup discussion identified very poor, and in some casesrnnon existent service as a barrier preventing many clientsrnfrom using IUDs and VSC.rnA relatively high use of contraception by ruralrnareas (62 .8%) compared to (36.1%) urban showed arnsubstantial penetration o f the rural areas by thernprogram. The paper argues that given the proper time andrneffort, contraceptive practices may prove effective inrncontrolling population growth rates.rnThe study concludes by establishing a strong case for arnwide and integrated family planning programs thatrnemphasize on effective methods with a high rate ofrnacceptance and continuation.rnconsiderable effort will have to be devoted to increasingrnthe availability of FP services particularlyrnIt is recommended that a community based operationalrnresearch should be conducted to provide strong evidencernand substantial conclusion
