Background---In Ethiopia 17% of births are not wanted, while 20% of births arernmistimed. Over 90% of adult cases of HIV in Ethiopia are attributable to heterosexualrnactivity. Dual protection is concurrent protection from unintended pregnancy andrnHIV/AIDS representing an important public health intervention in this context.rnObjective—to assess the extent of & barriers to dual protection among married orrncohabiting people in Adwa townrnMethodology— a community based stratified cross-sectional survey of 868 married orrncohabiting aged 15-49 years women and 15-59 years men and 4 FGDs composed of twornmen & women groups were conducted in Adwa town, in the northern part of the country,rnfrom February 8 to March 3, 2006. Seven ketenas were selected by simple randomrnsampling. A census was conducted and respondents were selected by computer generatedrnrandom number. Data analysis for the quantitative part was using EPI info v6 and SPSSrn11.0 for windows and the qualitative part was manually summarized & analyzed.rnResult- the practice of dual protection was found to be 13.8%. The leading barriersrnagainst dual method use were not having the knowledge on how to prevent dual risksrn(accounting for 70.2%) followed by need for more children. Sex, education, employment,rnknowledge, communication with spouse/partner & contraceptive provider & approval ofrncondom use with in marriage were found to be important predictors.rnConclusion - dual protection use is low in the presence of high morbidity & mortalityrndue to reproductive complications including from HIV. Condom use is low amongrncurrent contraceptive users. Lack of knowledge is the predominant barrier for dualrnprotection method use. Communication is important for promotion of dual protection
