Background: Essential newborn care is a wide-ranging approach planned to improve the healthrnof newborns through interventions before, during and after pregnancy, immediately after birthrnand during postnatal period. In Ethiopia about 120,000 newborns die every year in the firstrnweeks of life which accounts for 42% of all deaths of under five mortality.rnObjective: The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and determinants of essentialrnnewborn care practices among mothers in selected health centers of Addis Ababa, cityrnadministration, Ethiopia.rnMethods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted in February to March, 2015. Arntotal of 576 women in the first six weeks of post partum were included in the study. Therncollected data were entered into computer using Epi-Data version 3.5 and analyzed using SPSSrnversion 21. Logistic regression was fitted to assess possible associations and the strength ofrnassociation was measured using odds ratio with 95% CI.rnResult: The study revealed that the level of essential new born care practices was 38.8%.rnEducation and advise about essential new born care practices during and after birth by skilledrnbirth attendants (OR=2.17, 95%, CI=1.42,3.31),home visit by health extension workerrn(OR=1.55, 95%CI=1.03,2.32) and place of delivery at health centers (OR=7.69, 95% CI =1.32,rn36.42), at private health facility(OR=9.18, 95% CI=1.32, 63.75) and government hospitalrn(OR=6.68, 95% CI =1.32, 33.87) were found to have statistically significant association withrnessential new born care practices.rnConclusion: This study indicated that level of essential newborn care practices were low evenrnthough the majority of respondents practice early initiation of breast feeding and safe cord care.rnHome visit by health extension workers, timing of postnatal care visit by skilled birth attendants,rnadvice about essential newborn care practices during and after pregnancy and place of deliveryrnwere found to be independent predictors of essential newborn care practices in the study area
