Background- Addressing family planning in the postpartum period is crucial for better maternal,rnneonatal and child survival because it enables women to achieve healthy interval between births.rnThe first year after a woman has given birth is crucial for use of contraceptives to preventrnunwanted pregnancy. Many women, however, do not realize that they are at a risk for pregnancyrnduring this period. Consequently, contraceptive use by women during this period is low,rnresulting to unintended pregnancies and unwanted childbearing.rnObjectives -To assess intention and determinants of contraceptive use among postpartumrnmarried women in health centers of Adama.rnMethod- - A facility based cross sectional study that employed exit interviews with postnatalrnclients was conducted in all public health centers, from June –July, 2016 in Adama town. Fourrnhundred twenty two study subjects were allocated to the institution by proportional based on thernnumber of deliveries three months prior to the study. Pre tested structured Amharic versionrnquestionnaire was used to collect the data through interview. Both bivariate and multiple logisticrnregressions were used to identify determinant factors.rnResult -Of 420 postnatal women interviewed 66.2% of them were intention to use contraceptivernmethods and 45.5% postnatal mothers stated that they have an intention to start after 45 days ofrndelivery. However, 43.6% of respondents have negative attitude towards modern contraceptive.rnGovernmental Occupation, Desire for more children, Frequency of ANC visit and discussionrnwith providers after delivery were the main determinants of the intention to use postpartumrnfamily planning among the mothers (AOR of 3.029; 95%CI (1.19, 7.70), AOR of 0.45; 95%CIrn(0.24, 0.84)), AOR of 0.42; 95%CI (0.20, 0.85) and AOR of 2.98; 95% CI of (1.84, 4.82))rnrespectively.rnConclusion and Recommendation-This study has revealed that intention to use contraceptivernduring post partum period is significantly higher. Family planning programmes should give highrnpriority to the mothers in order to encourage them uptake contraceptives as early as possiblernduring their postpartum period. Likewise, there is need to strengthen policies that promote girlsrneducation and opportunity of job. Health professional should discuss about FP after delivery andrnduring consecutive antenatal visit is crucial to improve contraceptive knowledge and empowerrnwomen to make informed choice
