Malnutrition is one of the major problem in the worldrnparticularly in developing countries and it is endemic inrnEthiopia. Different studies have showed that severe malnutritionrnduring infancy negatively affects mental development. Mostrnmalnutrition begins in the second year of life, and most of itrnis chronic and mild to moderate in severity. This is why therncurrent study is looking at even mildly malnourished children 1rn- 4 years of age.rnTo assess the mental development of children in relation torntheir nutritional status , 111 children 12 - 42 months of agernfrom a single peasant association were taken in this study. Fromrnthese children 49.5% were under weight , 52.2% were stunted andrn9.9% were wasted. The mean Bayley score was 88 and SD 13. Mostrn(71.2%) scored 76 - 101.rnThe mean Bayley score between those stunted and non-stuntedrnshowed a significant difference. Multiple linear regression alsornshowed H/A significantly related to mental development. Inrnaddition to nutritional status, birth order and delivery eventsrnwere shown to have strong relation to mental development.rnTherefore we recommend an extensive health education onrnnutrition, expansion of delivery services to the ruralrnpopulation and further research on mental development ofrnchildren with emphasis on the effect of family interaction andrnchild rearing practice on mental development.
