Sexual Violence And Associated Factors Among Female Students Of Addis Ababa Science And Technology University

Background: Sexual violence is one of the problems that endanger the lives of women. Sexual rnviolence may occur at any age, in any settings and at any place. Higher education institutions arernamong the places where sexual violence is prevalent. There are different factors which make womenrnvulnerable to sexual violence. rnObjective: The objective of the study is to assess the prevalence of sexual violence and associatedrnfactors among female students of Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. rnMethods: Institution based cross sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa Science andrnTechnology University in March 2019 using self-administered structured questionnaire. Threernhundred female students were selected by simple random sampling technique and participated in thernstudy. Data was entered by Epi info version 7 and has been analyzed by using SPSS version 21.rnDescriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, median and proportions were calculated.rnBinary logistic regression was applied to explore exposure variables factors associated with sexualrnviolence. The result was presented using appropriate frequencies, proportions, odds ratio by a 95%rnconfidence interval. Variables with p-value less than 0.05 were considered to have a significantrnassociation with sexual violence. rnResult: The mean age of students was found to be 20.8 (SD±1.39). Of the total respondents, 23.4 %rnfaced sexual violence after joining the university and rape (41.4 %) was the most encountered sexualrnviolence. 33.1 % perceived that they are vulnerable to sexual violence. Among total respondents, 71.2rnand 87.3 % point out the presence of night clubs and drug/substance retailers around the universityrnrespectively. Living status of family, income status of family, khat chewing and being afraid ofrnsexual violence within the university are factors associated with sexual violence in the study area. rnConclusion and Recommendations: Sexual violence is found to be high. Living and income statusrnof family, khat chewing, history of sexual violence and afraid of being sexually violated within thernuniversity were the risk factors. The problem needs due attention and remedial action from policyrnmakers, college officials, parents, students and other concerned bodies.
