Ct Scan Evaluation Normal Liver Spleen And Kidney Size Parameters In Adults At Tash Addis Ababa Ethiopia An Institutional-based Cross-sectional Prospective Study
Introduction: Liver, spleen, and kidney size can be affected by different diseases so, wellestablishedrnrnmeasurements of the actual size of those organs are mandatory. Computedrntomography is one imaging modality that measures the sizes of the internal organs accurately.rnObjective: The main aim of this study was to determine the normal liver, spleen, and kidneysrnsize parameters and their correlation with demographic factors on abdominal CT scans inrnadultswho visited TASH, Addis Ababa, EthiopiarnMethods: a prospective hospital-based cross-sectional study was done from June 24-Decemberrn28, 2020 in adults who visited TASH. Non-probability, the convenience study design was used.rnData were collected from consecutive eligible adults who came for abdominal CT scans in thernstudy period, using interviewer-administered structured questionnaires. A total of 1008rnabdominopelvicCT was examined and 164 adults (117 for liver, 124 for kidney, and 147 forrnspleen)were selected for this study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.Different linearrnmeasurements of the liver, spleen, and kidneys were taken and the volume of those organs wasrncalculated from the linear measurements. The data was cleaned and analyzed using SPSS versionrn26.0. Student t-test and Pearson correlation were used to perform statistical analysis and thernresults were presented using tables and figures.rnResults:The mean volume of the liver, spleen, right kidney, and left kidney were 1089.33 cm3 ±rn257.73 mc3, 195.82 cm3 ± 84.72 cm3, 106.62±28.88 cm3, and 115.02 ±28.51 cm3 respectively.rnThe mean maximum CC length, MHP CC length, the MHP AP diameter, and the maximumrntransverse diameter of the liver were found to be 14.88 ±1.94, 10.21± 1.73, 14.99 ±1.85, andrn15.71 ± 2.19 respectively. The mean maximum length, width, and thickness of the spleen werern9.53 ± 1.53, 9.10±1.42, and 4.18 ± 0.91 respectively. The mean maximum length, width, andrndepth of the kidneywere 9.83±1.02, 4.66±0.56, & 4.48±0.47 and 13±1.04, 4.84±0.58, &rn4.43±0.49 on the right and left side respectively. The volume of the liver, the right kidney, andrnthe left kidney were positively correlated with the height, weight, BMI, and BSA of patients.rnSplenic volume was also positively correlated with the weight, height, and BSA of thernparticipants. The age of the patients was significantly negatively correlated with the liver and leftrnkidney volume.rnConclusion:The mean volume of the liver, spleen, and kidney were highly correlated with bodyrnhabitus including height, weight, and BSA. There was a significant decrement in the size of thernliver and kidney with aging.
