In recent years, many commercial centers like shopping centers and malls are under rnconstruction in Addis Ababa city. These developments and the rising vehicles population in therncity have resulted in growing demand for parking spaces and run into severe multidimensionalrntransportation problems. The study assessed the demand for parking spaces in selectedrnshopping centers through investigative parking utilization indices survey. Findings revealrninadequacy of designated parking facilities.rnThe present study has also made an empirical approach to develop parking demand modelrnthrough case study of ten important shopping centers and malls in the city by analyzing somernquantitative factors affecting the parking demand. The findings suggest that there exists arnmathematical model providing linear, positive and most significant relationship between thernparking demand and physical properties (explanatory variables) of the shopping centers andrnmalls. Gross floor area, plinth area and existing parking space were identified as the directrninfluencing variable among the four selected explanatory variables. A verification study wasrnconducted to test the validity of the regression model. The verification has indicated that therernis a shortage of proper parking facilities in at least in most of the shopping centers. rnThis finding provides a basis for design consideration if the present pattern of vehiclernownership and other circumstances prevail in the near future. The model developed wouldrnhelp to determine adequate parking demand so that adequate parking spaces can be planned atrnproper location. Finally, the study recommends a method towards providing adequate parkingrnspace is an essential consideration for construction of shopping centers in Addis Ababa city.
