According to the United Nations Overview of Addis Ababa City Solid WasternManagement System (2010), it is estimated that only 65% of the waste generated in therncity is collected, with the rest being deposited in open sites, drainage channels, andrnrivers. And also due to lack of awareness and willingness to sort wastes at householdrnlevels it makes the waste management practice poor. As Bole is one of the sub-citiesrnamong the 10 sub-cities, the waste collection and transportation is not efficient. rnTherefore, in order to improve the waste collection efficiency, properly designed andrnoptimized waste collection routing system is very crucial for minimizing operating costrnand to reduce littering of uncollected solid wastes from roadsides and open areas. rnThis paper deals with, assessing the current waste logistics practice in Bole sub-city andrnimproving the waste logistics system by applying Geographical Information systems as arndecision support tool for the optimization of waste collection and transportation forrnimproving waste collection efficiency. From the study, it was found that the wasternlogistics practice of sorting, recycling, composting are practiced with a little extentrnmeasuring below 50%. The study also optimized the total collection distance byrncomparing two scenarios with the current collection route. The scenarios were:rnoptimization without transfer station and with the introduction of transfer stationrnlocations 1 and 2. From the analysis, 79.1 %, 86% and 82.4% benefit of the optimizedrnroute distance and 54.8%,68.3% and 58.5% benefit of total travel time without thernapplication of transfer station and with the application of transfer station location 1 and 2rnrespectively were obtained. rnThe major conclusion of this study is the waste management of the sub-city suffers fromrna poor waste logistics practice and an inefficient waste collection and transport system.rnThough the results from this study are encouraging enough to further expand the scope torncover all sub-cities in Addis Ababa, in order to improve the waste logistics practice inrnthe sub-city, a lot of effort is needed to create an awareness on reverse logistics to thernpublic and an efficient waste logistics practice has to be introduced to tackle the problem.
