Data on fertility preferences are useful as an indicator or general attitudesrntowards child bearing- and of the possible future course of fertility. The studyrnintends to explore the fertility intentions and contraceptive practices of currentlyrnmarried women in Jimma Raaree woreda. To this end a community based crosssectionalrnstudy was made. A multistage sampling procedure was carried out torninterview 422 women in the study area.rnThe study is designed in such away that the vanous demographic andrnsocioeconomic variables have an effect on fertility preferences and contrac.e ptivernpractices. The independent variables are therefore demographic and sociorneconomIc variables and the dependent variables are fertility preferences andrncontraceptive practices. In order to examine then the effect of these variables, rnthe study utilizes both bi-variate and multivariate analytical techniques.rnThe result of logistic regression suggests that among the demographicrnvariables, both women's age and number of living children; and among SOClOrneconomic variables, place of residence/women's education, work status andrnexposure to mass media are found out to be significantly affecting fertilityrnpreferences and contractive practices.rnIt is therefore recommended that raising the status of women through educationrnactivity, providing women with a permanent income, promoting communicationrnbetween couples is of prime importance to erode cultural barriers to contraceptivernuse and reduce fertility
