The study examines the role of water harvesting irrigation on generatingrnincome of households and address what was the challenges forrndeveloping water harvesting schemes in Woreda Hentalo Wajerat specificrnarea of the two Tabias, Hagerselam and Arra Asegeda. This study wasrnconducted with the major objectives to assess the performance of waterrnharvesting schemes in the specific areas, to investigate the effects ofrnwater harvesting on income generation to enhance food security andrnemployment creation with the existing management activities of waterrnharvesting system in the study area with the aim of promoting bestrnpractices.rnResults are based on household survey and focus group discussion. Datarnwas collected from 90 sample households based on interviews and threerndifferent sessions of 30 farmers from the two kebele focus grouprndiscussions.rnThe study findings indicated that -water harvesting contributes for foodrnsecurity enhancement and seco-economic demanding interventionrncurrently being under taken inihe rural Ethiopia. However, the productionrnof horticulture obtained from water harvesting irrigation and otherrnbenefits such as increased, employment creation and food security arernindication that water harvesting especially when it combined withrndifferent packages can generate more income. On the other handrnbecause of it is new technology, there are some challenges for the samplernhouseholds to be solved to sustain the water harvesting schemes.rnThe study of water harvesting schemes in the selected Tabias indicatedrnthat after preparing the ponds they did not get the necessary materialsrnand they forced to do it with clay soil. As a result, many of the podsrnconstructed were with no water, with technical failure while some othersrnretain water only for a short period of time after the rain stopped. Tornsustain the technology it need training for both the experts and farmers tornget more water to reduced food insecurity
