The objective of the present study was to examine illness perception, coping strategies andrnpsychosocial adjustments among adult TB patients in Northwestern Ethiopia. The study had twornphases. In the first phase, in-depth interviews were conducted on 13 TB patients. Themes thatrnemerged from the analyzed data were used to construct questionnaires. In the second phase ofrnthe study, valid questionnaires were collected from 346 TB patients. Factor structures of thernscales in the questionnaires were extracted using exploratory factor analysis. The qualitativerndata were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The data collected through thernquestionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiplernregression, path regression models and path structural equation model. In the study, TB patientsrnwere found out to have both positive and negative perceptions of their illness. At the same timernthey were found to have strong emotional reactions as soon as they understood that they had TB.rnThe study revealed that TB patients employed a host of strategies to cope with their illness wherernpraising God coping had been the most frequently employed strategy. The study also revealedrnthat patients underwent higher levels of positive and negative psychosocial adjustments in therncourse of their illness. Besides, it was found that coping mediated the association between illnessrnperceptions and coping strategies. From the findings of the study, it was concluded that thernperceptions TB patientsâ€™ had about their illness played a major role in the management of theirrnillness. It was also concluded that TB patients who had strong emotional reactions were morernlikely to undergo through higher levels of psychosocial adjustment difficulties. Finally, it wasrnrecommended that TB treatment regimens need to incorporate mental and social healthrntreatment techniques and TB eradication campaigns need to take patientsâ€™ perception intornconsideration.
