This paper examines the concept of extreme conformity from the vantage point of keyrnpersonalities from the Derg era. Conformity is supposed to occur when the subject demonstratesrnthe demanded behavior from the object. For this study the subjects were the Ethiopian peoplernand the objects were among Ethiopians those people who have/had the political power to drivernconformity from the society. To disentangle the points, the study applied qualitative phenomenalrnstudy by conducting an interview and participating in a group discussion with a total fourteenrnparticipants of which eight took part in an intervew while the rest took part in a grouprndiscussion. The participants of the study are of two minds when asked general questions theyrnagree on the general premises of the Ethiopian society being conformist to political power butrnwhen asked specific questions discrepancies seem to emerge. The paper presents its conclusionrnon the premise that the Ethiopian society is stirred to conformity mainly because of the extremernpoverty it is in.The findings show that fear of violence and repercussion of non-conformityrncontributes a lesser role in making the society conformist compared to the extensive poverty.rnOther factors such as the malicious repercussions of non-conformity, religious and family valuesrnwhich teach respect for authority were discussed as a tributary factors leading to extremernconformity.While it was asserted that the culture of extreme conformity is not going anywhere inrnthe near future, the recommendations for this study are for social psychologists to contributerntheir sharetowards societal interventionson thedrafting and implementation ofappropriaternpolices onthe education curriculaand research in relevant fieldsamong other things
