This study examined the psycho - social perceptions of students orphanedrnby HIV / AIDS at Awassa Boarding Secondary School. Psychosocialrnquestionnaires were distributed among 150 (97 male and 53 female)rnstudents orphaned due to HIV/ AIDS and interviews were held with thernschool director, social worker of the organization that provided boardingrnservices and one teacher of students orphaned by HIV / AIDS. Quantitativernand qualitative methods of data analysis were employed. The resultsrnindicated that the majority of the students had psychological problemsrn(low self - esteem, depression and anxiety). Moreover, they had socialrnproblems (social avoidance and distress, shyness and sociability, andrnloneliness and social dissatisfaction). There was a significant relationshiprnbetween psychological and social perceptions. Lack of counseling service, rnweak coordination between the school and boarding provider, limitedrnboarding service for students orphaned by HIV/ AIDS, little communityrnawareness of the program, and lack of emphasis from other organizationsrnwere major contributing factors to the psychosocial perceptions of studentsrnorphaned by HIV / AIDS
